The city has a tropical savanna climate. This means the weather is often hot and humid. The hottest months are January, February, and March. The rainiest month is May. Most of the rain falls between March and July. This happens because of strong winds from the south. The driest months are from September to February. During this time, the winds are weaker and there are fewer clouds.

Long ago, indigenous peoples spoke the Boime language nearby. They lived near the São Francisco River. Around 1602, the Portuguese crown gave the land to Pero Gonçalves. At that time, the coast had only small fishing villages. A village called Santo Antônio de Aracaju was recorded in 1699. It was founded by João Mulato, who was an indigenous Brazilian. It sat at the mouth of the Sergipe River near the Atlantic Ocean.

Aracaju became the capital on March 17, 1855. Before this, the capital was São Cristóvão. That city was far from the sea. It only had a small river port for small boats. Large ships could not land there easily. Government officials wanted a better location for the capital. They chose the beach near the Sergipe River. They built a post office, a police station, and a port called Atalaia.

Today, the city has many different uses. The economy relies on industry and services. Many people visit for low-cost tourism and stay in hostels. The city also hosts many sports events. During the 2016 Summer Olympics, teams from seven countries visited. Athletes from places like Japan, Poland, and Ukraine came to train here. Travelers can reach the city through the Santa Maria Airport. This airport has been working since 1958.
