The city is a very important place for trade in northern Brazil. Many things like gold, iron, and timber pass through the area. It is known as a major commercial hub for the whole state.

One of the most amazing things about Macapá is its location. The equator line runs right through the middle of the city.

Because of this, people call it the "capital of the middle of the world." You can visit the Marco Zero monument to see this line. At certain times of the year, the sun shines on the monument in a special way. Even the local football stadium sits on the equator. The middle line of the pitch is exactly on the equator line.

The history of the city goes back many hundreds of years. The name Macapá comes from a Tupi word meaning "place of many bacabas." This refers to the fruit of a local palm tree. A Spaniard named Francisco de Orellana claimed the region in 1544. Later, the modern town began as a military base in 1738. In 1758, a man named Sebastião Veiga Cabral founded the town.

The environment around Macapá is very green and wet. Much of the land is covered by tropical rainforest.

The Parazinho Biological Reserve protects an island in the river. There are also areas like Rio Curiaú to protect the local culture. These places help keep the nature and the people safe.
