The climate in this region is known as a tropical monsoon climate. This means the weather stays fairly consistent throughout the year. Average daily temperatures usually stay between 25 and 26 degrees Celsius. The city experiences a short dry season during June, July, and August. However, it is very wet from November through April. While much of the surrounding forest has been cut down, many protected areas still exist nearby. These include the Mapinguari National Park and the Cuniã Ecological Station.

The history of the city is tied to big changes in the land. Pioneers began settling the area around 1907 to build a railroad. This project was called the Madeira-Mamoré railroad. The city was officially founded on October 2, 1914. In the early days, many workers came from the Caribbean, specifically Barbados.

The city grew during the rubber boom, but that economy stopped when cheaper rubber was found elsewhere. Later, the city became important again during World War II. This happened because the world needed more rubber for the war effort.

Today, the economy relies on different things like mining and farming. People look for cassiterite, which is used to make tin. Gold is also found in the nearby Madeira River. In the 1950s, people also discovered gold and started large cattle farms. This led to many people moving to the area. The population grew to about 300,000 people during that time. Now, the city has about 460,434 people living there.
