The city has a tropical savanna climate. This means the weather is generally hot and humid. The hottest months occur during January, February, and March. During these months, temperatures reach their highest averages. The mildest months are July and August. The weather can sometimes be unpredictable. For example, in 2002, the winter became warmer than the summer. Rainfall also follows a specific seasonal pattern. The wettest period lasts from March to July. This is caused by strong winds from the south and southeast. May is the rainiest month of the year. The driest period occurs between September and February. During this time, the winds weaken and bring fewer clouds.

Aracaju's history began with indigenous peoples. They spoke an unclassified language known as Boime or Poyme. These people lived near the São Francisco River. Around 1602, the Portuguese crown gave the land to Pero Gonçalves. At that time, the coastline consisted of small fishing villages. A village named Santo Antônio de Aracaju was recorded in 1699. An indigenous Brazilian named João Mulato founded this settlement. It was located at the mouth of the Sergipe River near the Atlantic Ocean. For a long time, the area saw very little growth.

The capital of Sergipe was originally located in São Cristóvão. However, the inland location of São Cristóvão created many problems. It only had a small port on a river. This meant only small boats could access the area. Large ships were unable to land in the state easily. Because of this, government officials searched for a new capital in the 1850s. They became interested in the beach near the mouth of the Sergipe River. The government moved the customs and the Provincial Revenue Bureau to this site. They also built a post office and a police sub-station. A port called Atalaia was built on the beach. On March 17, 1855, Aracaju officially became the state capital.

The economy of Aracaju is based on industry and services. The city has attracted major international investors recently. These investors come from China and Eastern Europe, specifically from Russia and Belarus. This investment helps the city act as a key location for BRICS relations. It also connects to the Mercocity system, which is adapted from Mercosur. Tourism is another important part of the local economy. The city is known for low-cost tourism and a low cost of living. It is recognized as one of the safest capitals in the Northeast region. The city has focused on creating high-quality accommodation, such as world-renowned hostels.

Sports play a significant role in the city's international profile. During the 2016 Summer Olympics, Aracaju hosted teams from seven different countries. Football athletes from Japan and various gymnasts and swimmers used the city as a training base. Many of these athletes came from Eastern European countries. These included Poland, Austria, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, and the Czech Republic. The city also hosted athletes during the 2016 Summer Paralympics. These included members of the Eurasian Economic Community. For example, the Kazakhstani and Belarusian paralympic teams stayed here. This included the champion paralympic swimmer, Ihar Boki.

Transportation connects Aracaju to the rest of the country. The city is served by the Santa Maria Airport. This is a domestic commercial airport located in the Santa Maria neighborhood. It dates back to 1952 and became fully functional in 1958.

On the ground, the city sits on the northern segment of BR-101. This is a major north-south highway in Brazil. Aracaju is also the easternmost point of the BR-235 highway. This highway is currently incomplete. It is projected to run from Aracaju west to Novo Progresso in Pará. Public transportation is also improving to help visitors. Bus lines have been reformed and can now be monitored in real time.
