The capital city is Salvador. It sits on a spit of land near the Atlantic Ocean. This location separates the Bay of All Saints from the sea. The Bay of All Saints is the largest bay on the Brazilian coast.

The geography of Bahia is divided by a large feature. The Diamantina Tableland, or Chapada Diamantina, splits the state into two zones. The eastern section receives regular rainfall. This area contains the lush Atlantic Forest.

In contrast, the western area is much more arid. This dry region is known as the sertão. The natural dryness was made worse in the 19th century. This happened because cowboys started wildfires to improve the grass.

A vital water source flows through this landscape. The São Francisco River crosses the state from west to east. It begins in Minas Gerais and flows through western Bahia. The river eventually empties into the Atlantic Ocean. It is essential for the dry western regions. The river provides a continuous water supply during dry seasons. Large projects use its power. The Sobradinho Dam created one of the largest reservoirs in the world. Other projects include the Paulo Afonso Hydroelectric Complex.

The history of Bahia began with Portuguese exploration. Pedro Álvares Cabral sighted Monte Pascoal in 1500. He landed at Porto Seguro on the southern coast. Portugal claimed this territory for their crown. In 1549, the city of Salvador was established on a hill.

Salvador served as the administrative capital for Portuguese colonies. It was also the religious capital of Brazil for a long time. The state was a center for sugarcane and tobacco. This economy relied on the importation of many African slaves. More than one-third of all slaves sent to Brazil were processed here.

Bahia also has a history of resistance and change. The state was the last area to join the independent Empire of Brazil. Local elites remained loyal to the Portuguese crown until 1823. Battles like those in Pirajá were fought to decide control. In 1835, the Malê Revolt occurred in the city. This was a major slave rebellion led by Muslim West Africans. The term "malê" came from the Yoruba word "imale."
