It consists of four distinct states: Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo. This region serves as the primary engine for the Brazilian economy. In 2022, the Southeast was responsible for approximately 53% of the nation's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This figure represents the total value of all goods and services produced in the country.

The region also holds the highest GDP per capita in Brazil. It is home to about 44% of the total Brazilian population. This high density leads to many airports, ports, highways, and universities.

The geography of the region is incredibly diverse. In the state of São Paulo, the Ribeira Valley contains a large part of the Atlantic Forest. This area is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It supports approximately 400 species of birds, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals.

The Alto Ribeira Tourist State Park (PETAR) is famous for its geologic formations. There are 454 registered caves in the state of São Paulo, mostly in the Ribeira Valley. The 280 caves at PETAR represent the largest concentration of caves in Brazil. This makes the area a major destination for ecotourists.

Minas Gerais offers a landscape defined by mountains, valleys, and caverns.

The state is the source of major rivers like the São Francisco and the Paraná. These rivers are often used for hydroelectric power. The Furnas dam is one example of these power plants. The southern part of the state contains high peaks like the Serra da Mantiqueira. The Pico da Bandeira is the third highest mountain in Brazil, standing at 2,890 meters. This peak marks the border between Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo.

Rio de Janeiro is the smallest state in the Southeast macroregion. However, it possesses the third longest coastline in Brazil at 635 kilometers.

Additionally, the region is a leader in poultry. It accounts for 38.9% of Brazil's total chicken population and 43.8% of its egg production.

Mining provides significant wealth to the region, especially in Minas Gerais.

In 2017, Minas Gerais was the largest producer of iron, gold, and zinc in Brazil. It also produces significant amounts of niobium and aluminum. The state is famous for its gemstones, including emerald, topaz, and aquamarine. Brazil was once the world's largest producer of diamonds between 1730 and 1870. This mining occurred in the Serra da Canastra region. Today, Minas Gerais remains a top producer of many precious stones. It even produces the valuable Imperial Topaz in Ouro Preto.

Industrialization has transformed the Southeast into a manufacturing powerhouse.
