It sits along the Atlantic Ocean to the east. To its north lies Pernambuco, and to its south is Sergipe. Bahia borders the state to the southwest. The capital city is Maceió. Alagoas is the second smallest state in Brazil by area. Only Sergipe is smaller. Despite its size, it is a significant part of the nation. It contains 102 municipalities. The most populous cities include Maceió, Arapiraca, and Palmeira dos Índios.

The geography of Alagoas changes as you move inland. The coast features beautiful beaches and fringing reefs.

Behind these beaches, green coastal hills rise up. These hills receive enough rainfall to support agriculture and remnants of the Atlantic Forest. Much of this land is used for sugarcane farming.

Further inland, the landscape shifts to the Sertão. The Sertão is a high, dry region. It is dominated by the caatinga, a type of scrubland. This area contains many thorn-filled and sometimes toxic plants. The local people are often associated with the legend of the leather-clad cowboy.

The name Alagoas has deep linguistic roots. It likely comes from the Latin word *alago*, meaning a reservoir or lake. This is related to the Spanish and Italian word *laguna*. The name refers to the lakes found along the coast near Maceió. In the 16th century, settlements grew near the Alagoa do Norte and Alagoa do Sul. These lakes were sometimes called the Manguaba and Mundaú lagoons.

The name reflects the water-rich environment that helped shape early settlements.

History shows that Alagoas was once part of the Captaincy of Pernambuco. It did not gain autonomy until 1817. This independence followed a political reprisal by King John VI of Portugal. The Dutch invaded the region in 1631 to control the sugarcane trade. They built Fort Maurits in Penedo on the São Francisco River. The Dutch were eventually expelled in 1646 after intense fighting in Porto Calvo. This conflict left the local economy in ruins. During this time, African slaves escaped to form villages called quilombos. The most famous of these was Palmares, which was destroyed at the end of the 17th century.

The economy of Alagoas is diverse but faces challenges. It is one of the poorer states in Brazil. The service sector is the largest part of the GDP at 55.8%. The industrial sector follows at 36.9%. Agriculture makes up 7.3% of the GDP. Alagoas is a major producer of sugarcane and coconuts. It also produces significant amounts of natural gas. The state exports sugar and alcohol, with sugar accounting for 58.8% of exports. In recent years, tourism has grown along the coast. High-rise hotels now line the beaches of Maceió.

Alagoas is famously nicknamed the "Land of the Marshals." This title honors Deodoro da Fonseca and Floriano Peixoto. They were the first two presidents of Brazil. The state has produced many other notable figures. These include the musician Djavan and the writer Graciliano Ramos. It is also a place of learning and research. The Federal University of Alagoas is a major institution in the state.

Higher education is supported by several other universities and technical institutes.

Modern infrastructure supports the state's growth. The Zumbi dos Palmares International Airport serves the Maceió area. The terminal was designed by architect Mário Aloísio. It uses materials like glass, metal, and granite. The design includes special access for people with physical disabilities. The airport also features "Aeroshopping," which provides leisure and services for travelers. From its historic towns like Marechal Deodoro to its busy ports, Alagoas connects its past to a changing future.
