geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Akwa Ibom is a state located in the South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria. It sits along the Atlantic Ocean to the south. The state borders Cross River State to the east. Rivers State and Abia State border the west and north-west. The state is named after the Qua Iboe River. This river bisects the state before flowing into the Bight of Bonny. Akwa Ibom is the 30th largest state in Nigeria by area. It is the 15th most populous state. As of 2016, the population was nearly 5.5 million people.

The geography of the state is divided into two distinct zones. The coastal far south contains Central African mangroves. These are saltwater wetlands. The rest of the state consists of Cross–Niger transition forests. In the southeast, the Stubb Creek Forest Reserve is a notable area. This reserve is heavily threatened. It is home to declining populations of crocodiles and putty-nosed monkeys. It also hosts red-capped mangabeys and Sclater's guenons. Some species, like the African leopard, may be extirpated there. The offshore waters are also biodiverse. Large fish populations live there. You can also find cetaceans, which are marine mammals. These include bottlenose dolphins, pantropical spotted dolphins, humpback whales, and killer whales.

Akwa Ibom has a tropical monsoon climate. This means it has high temperatures and heavy rain all year. The average annual temperature is 28.47 °C. This is slightly lower than the Nigerian average. The state receives about 672 inches of precipitation annually. There are typically 275 rainy days each year. The average humidity is 80%. The UV-index is 7. There is a short dry season that lasts about 90 days.

The history of the region involves many different stages. In the pre-colonial period, people lived in city-states. Examples include the Ibom Kingdom and Akwa Akpa. There was no central government at that time. People lived in clan communities based on kinship. In 1884, the area became part of a British protectorate. The British organized the Enyong Division in 1904. The headquarters was in Ikot Ekpene. This city is the cultural and political capital of the Annang people.

After independence in 1960, the area was part of the Eastern Region. In 1967, it became part of the South-Eastern State. This area was part of the Nigerian Civil War. After the war, the South-Eastern State was renamed Cross River State in 1976. On September 23, 1987, the state was split. The military administration of General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida created Akwa Ibom. Uyo was chosen as the capital. This choice was intended to encourage development in all regions.

The economy of Akwa Ibom is driven by natural resources. It is the highest oil-producing state in Nigeria. The state produces vast amounts of crude oil and natural gas. Several Local Government Areas are key to this production. These include Esit Eket, Eket, Onna, Mkpat Enin, Ikot Abasi, Ibeno, Mbo, and Eastern Obolo. Other industries include agriculture. People grow substantial crops of cocoyam, yam, and plantain. Fishing and heliciculture, which is snail farming, are also important.

Despite high oil revenues, the state faces social challenges. Akwa Ibom ranks 17th in the Human Development Index in Nigeria. This is due to years of systemic corruption. These issues have diverted money away from infrastructure and education. The state is home to many ethnic groups. The Ibibio, Annang, and Oron are the primary groups. The Ibibio are the majority and hold political sway. There are over 20 languages spoken in the state. These belong to the Benue–Congo language family. Most residents are Christians.

The Methodist Boys' High School in Oron was founded in 1905. Today, the state has several higher institutions. These include Akwa Ibom State University and Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic. These schools help support the growing population of the state.
