The history of Bahia began with Portuguese exploration. Pedro Álvares Cabral sighted Monte Pascoal in 1500. He landed at Porto Seguro on the southern coast. Portugal claimed this territory for their crown. In 1549, the city of Salvador was established on a hill.

Bahia also has a history of resistance and change. The state was the last area to join the independent Empire of Brazil. Local elites remained loyal to the Portuguese crown until 1823. Battles like those in Pirajá were fought to decide control. In 1835, the Malê Revolt occurred in the city. This was a major slave rebellion led by Muslim West Africans. The term "malê" came from the Yoruba word "imale."

Later, the economy changed with new discoveries. Diamonds were found in 1844, which brought many "washers" to the area. Amethysts were also discovered in Caetité in 1872.
