While most capital cities in the Brazilian Northeast are located on the Atlantic coast, Teresina is unique. It is the only Northeast capital situated away from the ocean. The city sits approximately 366 km from the coast. It is a highly populated municipality with 902,644 inhabitants according to the 2022 census.

This makes it the 19th largest city in Brazil and the 16th largest state capital in the country.

The geography of Teresina is defined by its relationship with water. The city is situated on the east side of the Parnaíba River. This river serves as a border with the neighboring state of Maranhão. Across the Parnaíba, Teresina faces the city of Timon. The city is also positioned near the Poti River, which is a tributary of the Parnaíba. These two rivers meet at the northern end of the city. This meeting point features an environmental park with gazebos. The city sits at an altitude of about 72 meters. It covers a large territorial extension of 1,756 km2.

Teresina's climate is classified as a tropical wet and dry climate. This is known as the Aw classification in the Köppen system. The city experiences two distinct seasons. The rainy season occurs during the summer and autumn of the Southern Hemisphere. This period lasts from January to May. During these months, the weather is hot and wet, often with morning fog. The dry season occurs during the winter and spring. This lasts from June to August, bringing relatively milder nights. From September to December, the weather becomes very hot as humidity decreases. Locals call these hottest months the "Bro" period. This name comes from the fact that these months end in "-bro" in Portuguese.

The weather patterns in Teresina are quite extreme. It is recognized as the hottest city in Brazil. It also holds the record for the third-highest incidence of lightning in the world. Rainfall is often characterized by its speed and intensity. Storms frequently bring strong winds and a large force of water. The annual rainfall is approximately 2,200 mm. The highest recorded daily precipitation reached 175 mm. Temperatures are high throughout most of the year. The average temperature is around 27°C. In October, temperatures can reach a maximum of 35°C. The hottest recorded temperatures have exceeded 40°C. There are about 129.4 days each year when the temperature reaches or exceeds 35°C.

The history of Teresina began with colonization in the 18th century. In 1760, the area was a small community of fishermen. It was located near the Poty and Parnaíba rivers. This settlement eventually grew into a village called "Vila do Poty." Because the Parnaíba River riverbanks would inundate, the city was eventually built on higher ground. On August 16, 1852, the city was officially founded as Vila Nova do Poty. It became the capital of Piauí, replacing the previous capital, Oeiras. The move was intended to improve communication and trade with other cities and the coast. Later, the city was renamed Teresina. This was done to honor Empress Teresa Cristina, the wife of Emperor Pedro II.

The economy of Teresina is a significant part of the state's wealth. The city's Gross Domestic Product represents about 40% of the total GDP in Piauí. The economy is driven by trade and international manufacturing industries. The textile and garment industry is a major employer, creating about ten thousand jobs. Other manufacturing sectors include bicycles, drinks, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, furniture, and ceramics. The construction sector is also growing quickly due to the increasing verticality of the city. For transportation, the city uses the Teresina Metro, which has nine stations. There is also a bus service and the Senador Petrônio Portella Airport.

The Museu do Piauí holds antiques, furniture, and historical documents. For nature lovers, the Parque Zoobotânico features animals from the Brazilian fauna and other countries. The religious life of the city is significant, with 78.94% of the population identifying as Roman Catholic in 2010. The Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora das Dores is a major religious site. Teresina also serves as an educational hub with many universities, such as the Universidade Federal do Piauí. This combination of industry, history, and nature makes Teresina a central part of the region.
