It serves as the capital of the state of Piauí. Most capital cities in the Brazilian Northeast sit right by the Atlantic Ocean. Teresina is special because it is the only one not on the coast. It sits about 366 km away from the sea. The city is located in north-central Piauí. It sits near the Parnaíba River and the Poti River.

These two rivers meet at the northern end of the city.

The weather in Teresina is very unique and intense. It is known as the hottest city in all of Brazil. The city also has the third-highest amount of lightning in the world. There are two main seasons: a rainy season and a dry season. From January to May, the weather is hot and wet. Between June and August, the nights are a bit milder and drier. Locals call the hottest months the "Bro" period. This is because the hottest months end with "-bro" in Portuguese. The rain often comes with very strong winds and fast water.

Teresina has a very interesting history. It was founded on August 16, 1852. At first, it was called Vila Nova do Poty. This name came from the nearby Poti River. Later, the name was changed to honor Empress Teresa Cristina. She was the wife of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil. The city was actually the first planned city in Brazil. Before Teresina became the capital, a place called Oeiras held that title. People moved the capital to Teresina to make trade and talking easier. This was because Teresina is closer to the rivers and the coast.

Many people live and work in this large metropolitan area. The city has over 902,644 inhabitants living within its borders. When you include the neighboring city of Timon, the population is much larger. The whole region has over 2,893,729 people living there. Teresina is the 19th largest city in the entire country of Brazil. The economy relies on trade and many different factories. These factories make things like clothes, bicycles, and furniture. The city also has many places for learning, including several universities.

There are many sights to see if you visit Teresina. You can visit the Museu do Piauí to see old objects and documents. The Parque Zoobotânico is a zoo with animals from Brazil and other lands. For sports fans, the Albertão Stadium is a very big place.
