The history of Fortaleza is tied to various European powers and fortifications. Colonization began in 1603 under the Portuguese. Pero Coelho de Souza built the Fort of São Tiago and founded Nova Lisboa. In 1630, the Dutch invaded the Brazilian Northeast. They captured the fort and ruled Ceará for several years. After a battle in 1644, the original fort was destroyed. The Dutch West Indies Company later built a new fortress by the Pajeú River.

They named it Schoonenborch, which means "graceful stronghold." In 1654, the Portuguese took control of this fortress. They renamed it Fortaleza da Nossa Senhora de Assunção. This name eventually gave the modern city its name.

Over the centuries, Fortaleza transformed from a small settlement into a major city. It was officially established as a village in 1726. By 1799, it became the capital of the Ceará state. During the 19th century, the cotton industry helped the city grow. It became a regional center for exports to Europe. A customs building was constructed in 1812 to manage this trade. In the 1930s, the city expanded with new districts like Messejana and Porangaba.

Pleasant winds from the Atlantic Ocean often provide relief from the heat. The rainy season typically lasts from January to July. March and April are often the wettest months. The weather can be very variable. In 1877, a severe drought brought very little rain. However, in 1985, the city experienced a record wet year. The average annual temperature remains steady, and the average humidity is 77.5%.

Nature plays a significant role in the city's environment and ecology. The vegetation is typically coastal, including restinga areas near river mouths.

The park features the Cocó River, which is about 50 km long. This river ecosystem supports many mollusks, crustaceans, fish, birds, and mammals. Other protected areas include the Sabiaguaba Dunes and the Pedra da Risca do Meio Marine State Park. The latter protects coral reefs located ten miles offshore.

Fortaleza is also a diverse and complex society. The people who live there are known as Fortalezenses. The population is multiracial, with a large Pardo population. A significant wave of foreign immigrants arrived in the early 20th century. This included many Portuguese, as well as Syrian-Lebanese, Spanish, Italian, English, and French families. Today, the city is the fourth most visited destination in Brazil. It is a major center for tourism and leisure. However, the city also faces challenges like income inequality. About 22.9% of the population lives in favelas.
