The city has a very interesting way it grew. Long ago, people from Portugal arrived in the area. In 1603, a man named Pero Coelho de Souza built a fort. He named the new settlement Nova Lisboa. Later, the Dutch invaded the region in 1630. They took over the fort and ruled Ceará for a while. In 1649, the Dutch built a new fortress by the Pajeú River.

They called it Schoonenborch. When the Portuguese took control again, they renamed it Fortaleza da Nossa Senhora de Assunção. This long name is how the city got its name.

Fortaleza has changed a lot since those early days. It officially became a village in 1726. By 1799, it became the capital of the Ceará state. During the 1800s, the cotton industry helped the city grow. A large customs building was built in 1812 for trade. In the 1930s, the city added new districts like Messejana.

The history of Fortaleza is tied to various European powers and fortifications. Colonization began in 1603 under the Portuguese. Pero Coelho de Souza built the Fort of São Tiago and founded Nova Lisboa. In 1630, the Dutch invaded the Brazilian Northeast. They captured the fort and ruled Ceará for several years. After a battle in 1644, the original fort was destroyed. The Dutch West Indies Company later built a new fortress by the Pajeú River.

They named it Schoonenborch, which means "graceful stronghold." In 1654, the Portuguese took control of this fortress. They renamed it Fortaleza da Nossa Senhora de Assunção. This name eventually gave the modern city its name.

Over the centuries, Fortaleza transformed from a small settlement into a major city. It was officially established as a village in 1726. By 1799, it became the capital of the Ceará state. About 22.9% of the population lives in favelas.
