Formosa is a province located in northeastern Argentina.

It is a key part of the larger Gran Chaco Region. The province shares its northeast border with Asunción, Paraguay. To its south and west, it borders the Argentine provinces of Chaco and Salta. The capital city is also named Formosa. This name comes from an archaic Spanish word meaning "beautiful."

The geography of the province is defined by vast, flat plains. These plains sit between the Bermejo and Pilcomayo Rivers. Because the land has a very slight inclination toward the southeast, the terrain is quite level. This flatness causes the riverbeds to be unstable. As a result, small lagoons often form and are slowly reabsorbed into the ground. This cycle of water movement shapes the local landscape.

The climate in Formosa is tropical and varies by location.

The average annual temperature is 21 °C. However, summer temperatures can climb as high as 45 °C. Rainfall patterns change across the province. In the east, there is uniform annual rain of about 1000 mm. In other areas, the winter becomes a much drier season with only 80 mm of rain. These moisture levels create two distinct environments: jungle vegetation in the east and the Chaqueño forest elsewhere. Near the Salta border, the forest is so dense it is called the "Impenetrable."

History shows a long period of exploration and dispute. In the early 16th century, Sebastian Cabot and Diego García de Moguer explored the region. They were searching for a route from the Viceroyalty of Peru to Asunción. They eventually abandoned this route because the Pilcomayo and Bermejo Rivers were too shallow. The first European settlement, Concepción del Bermejo, was established in 1585. After Argentina and Paraguay gained independence in the 1810s, the territory was disputed. This dispute lasted until after the War of the Triple Alliance ended in 1870.

Its ecosystems include wetlands, forests, and grasslands. Many large mammals live here, such as the jaguar, puma, and ocelot. In the humid forests, you can find tapirs and howler monkeys. The drier zones host the giant armadillo, known locally as the tatú carreta.

Formosa is a major destination for birdwatchers. It contains 367 recorded bird species. This represents nearly half of all bird species found in Argentina. You might see toucans, macaws, or rheas in the wild. Reptiles like the yacare caiman also inhabit the river systems.

The economy of Formosa is largely based on agriculture and ranching.

The province has more than 1.5 million head of cattle. Farming is also a major industry, though it makes up about 10% of the total output. Cotton is a significant crop, representing half of the agricultural wealth. Farmers also grow 55,000 tons of maize and 25,000 tons of soybean annually.

Fruit production is also important. For example, the province produces about 70,000 tons of bananas every year. Citrus production, especially grapefruit, is growing quickly. In 2006, the economy was estimated at US$2.082 billion. This made it the second-least developed province in Argentina.

Administratively, the province is divided into nine departments. The government consists of an executive branch, a legislative branch, and a judiciary. The executive branch is led by a governor who is popularly elected. The province also has its own official anthem, the "Himno Marcha Formosa."
