It is located in northern Brazil within the valley of the Acre River. As the most populous municipality in Acre, it holds 387,852 inhabitants according to 2024 estimates. This number represents almost half of the total population of the state. Rio Branco serves as a vital administrative center for the region. It manages economic, political, and cultural activities for the surrounding area. The city is also one of the oldest urban centers in Northern Brazil.

The city's layout is defined by the Acre River, which divides it into two main sections. These are known as the First District and the Second District. The First District sits on the left bank of the river. The political administration moved to this side because the land is higher. This higher elevation makes the area less subject to flooding than the old center. Six bridges connect the two districts across the water. One notable structure is the Joaquim Macedo Catwalk, a cable suspension bridge completed in 2006.

The city is also organized by the Via Verde Ring Road. This road connects the main highways that reach the capital.

The history of Rio Branco began with the rubber industry. On December 28, 1882, migrant settlers from Northeastern Brazil founded a rubber plantation. This site was called Seringal Volta da Empresa and sat on the right bank of the river. A large tree called the Gameleira marks this original location. This tree is a strangler fig that remains vigorous today. It is quite large, measuring 15 meters in diameter at the trunk and 30 meters in height. The tree survived battles during the Acre War between revolutionaries and Bolivian troops.

This conflict eventually led to Brazil acquiring the territory of Acre.

During the rubber boom, Rio Branco became a wealthy and productive urban center. By August 1904, it was the primary center for the entire Acre valley. The streets near the Gameleira tree were full of commercial life. The city featured bars, cafes, and casinos that supported a lively nightlife. Many wealthy families lived there, often consisting of civil servants and liberal professionals. Syrian and Lebanese immigrants also arrived and shaped the local culture. By the mid-1930s, one specific area was known as "Bairro Beirut" due to these immigrants.

The climate in Rio Branco is classified as a tropical monsoon climate. It features a long wet season from October through May. The heaviest rainfall occurs between December and March, with monthly averages exceeding 250 mm.

In March 2023, the city experienced severe seasonal flooding. During that month, 585.9 mm of rain fell and displaced over 15,000 people. The city also has a shorter dry season lasting four months. Interestingly, Rio Branco has the lowest average annual temperature among Legal Amazonian capitals. The weather is cooler between May and August. In July 2010, the city recorded historic low temperatures.

Rio Branco is currently undergoing an economic transformation. Historically, the economy relied on extracting rubber and Brazil nuts. Today, the state is a major producer of beef, açaí fruit, farinha, and copaiba oil. Wood is now the primary export product for the state of Acre. The municipality is looking toward the future through new industries. These include agribusiness, aquaculture, and ecotourism.

Additionally, the company Petrobras has identified the region as having potential for petroleum extraction.

Transportation in the city is well-developed for the region. The Rio Branco-Plácido de Castro International Airport opened in 1999. It is located on the BR-364 highway in a rural area. The airport can receive 320,000 passengers per year and handles about 14 operations daily. Within the city, the Terminal Urbano helps manage public bus travel. Rio Branco also boasts the largest proportional bike path network per inhabitant in Brazil. This makes the city a unique place for cycling in the country.
