The history of the land began long before modern cities existed. Indigenous people established substantial settlements during the Woodland period, which lasted from 1000 B.C. to 1000 A.D. One of the oldest artificial structures in the area is a burial mound from the Mississippian culture period.

Shortly after, Charles McClung surveyed the land to establish a formal town. He divided the area into sixty-four lots, including spaces for a church, a graveyard, and a school. This school eventually became Blount College, the foundation of the University of Tennessee. In 1790, President George Washington appointed William Blount as governor of the Territory South of the River Ohio. Blount named the new capital Knoxville after General Henry Knox.
