This rock served as a waypoint for early travelers. It marked the transition from the flat Mississippi Delta to the mountains. There was an early effort to name the city "Arkopolis." This name appeared on some US Geological Survey maps. However, the name Little Rock eventually became the official name. The capital was moved here in 1821.
