The city is built upon the high Chickasaw Bluffs. These bluffs rise significantly from the Mississippi River. This high ground provides natural protection from river flooding. Because of this location, the site became a strategic point. Different powers competed to control the bluffs for many years. The geography made it a vital location for trade and defense. This natural advantage helped shape the city's future development.

Human settlement at this site began thousands of years ago. Indigenous cultures occupied the bluffs for many generations. During the first millennium A.D., the Mississippian culture was prominent here. They built large earthwork mounds for burials and ceremonies. These mounds were expressions of a sophisticated culture. The Chickasaw people later inhabited this large territory.
