The city's name comes from the river itself. The name is based on a French word. It refers to a narrow passage of water. Long before European arrival, Paleo-Indians lived in this region. They were part of the Mound Builders culture. By the 17th century, the Huron, Odawa, Potawatomi, and Iroquois peoples inhabited the area. The Anishinaabe people call this place Waawiiyaataanong. This means "where the water curves around."

French explorers founded the settlement in 1701. Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac and Alphonse de Tonty led the expedition. They built Fort Pontchartrain du Détroit on the north bank of the river. This fort was named after a French Secretary of State. The early economy relied on the fur trade. Native American peoples played vital roles as trappers and traders. In 1760, British troops gained control of the settlement. They eventually shortened the name to Detroit.

Detroit has survived major changes and disasters. In 1805, a great fire destroyed most wooden buildings. Only a stone fort and brick chimneys remained. Father Gabriel Richard coined a motto for the city. It means "We Hope For Better Things; It Shall Rise From the Ashes." This event is shown on the city seal. The city also faced economic shifts in the mid-20th century. Industrial restructuring and job losses caused the population to decline. From its 1950 peak of 1.85 million, the population fell by over 65 percent. The city filed for bankruptcy in 2013 but exited in 2014.

Today, the city is seeing new growth and revitalization. Recent census reports show the population is growing again. This is the first such growth in Michigan since the 1950s. Conservation efforts have saved many historic buildings. Projects include restoring theaters and renovating high-rises. New sports stadiums and riverfront projects also help the city. Detroit remains a vital part of the Great Lakes system.
