It is located in the Appalachian region of northern Alabama. The city sits just south of the Tennessee state border. It is the county seat of Madison County. The city limits also reach into Limestone, Marshall, and Morgan counties. The Huntsville metropolitan area is the second-most populous in the state. As of July 1, 2025, the city population reached an estimated 249,102 residents. This follows a 15.9% increase since the 2020 census. This growth makes Huntsville one of the top 20 fastest-growing cities in the United States.

The city's origins date back to the early 19th century. A pioneer named John Hunt arrived in 1805.

Before American settlement, an Indian trader named James Ditto used a landing on the river. In 1805, Thomas Freeman and Roach began government surveys. LeRoy Pope later purchased the area. He named the settlement Twickenham. The town was carefully planned around Big Spring.

Streets were laid out in a northeast to southwest direction. This design followed the flow of the spring. In 1811, the name changed to Huntsville to honor John Hunt. This change also helped avoid anti-British sentiment. Huntsville became the first incorporated town in what is now Alabama.

Huntsville played a major role in early state politics. In 1819, the city hosted a constitutional convention. Delegates met in the cabinet-making shop of Walker Allen. They wrote a constitution for the new state of Alabama. When Alabama joined the Union, Huntsville served as the first state capital. This designation lasted for only one legislative session. The capital later moved to more central locations. It moved to Cahaba, then Tuscaloosa, and finally Montgomery. In 1855, the Memphis and Charleston Railroad reached the city. This was the first railway to link the Atlantic coast with the lower Mississippi River.

Early economic growth relied on the cotton industry. Wealthy planters moved from Virginia, Georgia, and the Carolinas. They established plantations to grow short-staple cotton. The invention of the cotton gin made this possible. This industry relied heavily on the labor of enslaved people.

An 1822 census showed that 448 of the 1,300 inhabitants were slaves. This meant slaves made up 36% of the population. In the late 1800s, textile mills like Lincoln and Merrimack grew. These mills created company towns for workers. These towns included housing, schools, and stores. However, work was segregated by race. Black workers were often relegated to outside labor.

The American Civil War brought significant changes to the region. Huntsville initially opposed secession from the Union in 1861. However, the city provided many men for the Confederacy. The 4th Alabama Infantry Regiment was the first Alabama unit to fight. Union troops seized the city in April 1862. They wanted to control the Memphis and Charleston Railroad.

Union officers occupied large homes while soldiers camped on the outskirts. The city was used as a base of operations in 1863. While much of Huntsville remained intact, many surrounding villages were burned. After the war, the city focused on reconstruction. The Councill Training School became the first public school for African American students.

Modern Huntsville grew rapidly after World War II. In 1941, the U.S. Army built several facilities nearby. These included the Huntsville Arsenal and Redstone Arsenal.

These sites were used for chemical munitions during the war. After the war, the Army decided to use Redstone Arsenal for rocket research. This shift was helped by U.S. Senator John Sparkman. A group of German scientists arrived under Operation Paperclip. They were led by Wernher von Braun. This group helped establish the Ordnance Guided Missile Center. This center eventually became the heart of the American space program.

Today, Huntsville is famously known as "The Rocket City."

The Redstone Arsenal hosts many vital organizations. These include NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. It also houses the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command. The FBI and the U.S. Space Command are also located there. Visitors can see historic rockets on display in the city.
