The history of this land began long before European arrival. The Alibamu and Coushatta tribes inhabited the river banks. These groups were descendants of the Mississippian culture. This civilization was known for building massive earthwork mounds between 950 and 1250 AD.

The Alibamu lived on the east bank of the river. They inhabited two towns named Ikanatchati and Towassa. Ikanatchati means "red earth" in their language. Later, the Creek people migrated into the area. They moved to avoid warfare from the north.

European contact occurred in several distinct stages. Hernando de Soto and his expedition traveled through the area in 1540. The next recorded encounter was an English expedition in 1697. James McQueen, a Scots trader, became the first permanent European settler in 1716. He married a woman from the Coushatta or Alabama tribe. Because these tribes used a matrilineal system, their children were considered part of the mother's clan. Later, Abraham Mordecai established a trading post in 1785. He brought the first cotton gin to the state of Alabama.

The modern city was formed through the merger of two towns. These towns were New Philadelphia and East Alabama Town. They were incorporated as Montgomery on December 3, 1819. The city was named for Continental Army Major-General Richard Montgomery.

Montgomery played a central role in the 20th-century Civil Rights Movement. Many protests and major events occurred within the city. In 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her bus seat. This event sparked the Montgomery bus boycott. Leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. helped organize the community.
