This makes it the third-most populous metropolitan area in Virginia. It is also the 44th-largest metropolitan area in the United States.

The geography of the area shaped its early history. Before European settlers arrived, the land was part of the Powhatan Confederacy. The Arrohattoc people lived in a village called Arrohateck in this region.

English colonists from Jamestown arrived in the area between 1609 and 1611. Eventually, the Arrohattoc population declined. By 1611, the Henrico town was found to be deserted. Sir Thomas Dale then used the land to found Henricus. This was the first European settlement in Central Virginia. It sat where the Falling Creek empties into the James River.

William Byrd II is considered the founder of Richmond. In 1737, he commissioned Major William Mayo to design the town grid.

Byrd named the city after a town in England. He felt the bend in the James River looked like his home. The settlement was officially incorporated as a town in 1742. In 1780, Richmond replaced Williamsburg as the capital of Virginia. This move helped the state manage its growing western population. It also kept the capital safer from British attacks from the coast.

Richmond played a major role during the American Revolution. In 1775, Patrick Henry delivered a famous speech at St. John's Church.

He famously said, "Give me liberty or give me death!" Later, Thomas Jefferson wrote the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom. This law was enacted in 1786. It helped separate the church from the state. In 1788, the Virginia State Capitol was completed. Jefferson helped design this building in the Greek Revival style.

The city grew into an industrial center due to its location. George Washington helped design the James River and Kanawha Canal. This canal helped transport cargo across the Appalachian Mountains. It connected the James River to the Kanawha River. The Kanawha flows into the Ohio River and then the Mississippi River. The falls of the James River also provided hydropower. This energy helped Richmond build large manufacturing facilities. These included flour mills and iron works. By 1850, the Richmond and Petersburg Railroad connected the city to other places.

This factory produced massive amounts of artillery and munitions. It even made 723 tons of armor plating for the CSS Virginia. However, Richmond was difficult to defend. In April 1865, the city faced a major crisis. As Confederate troops evacuated, many fires broke out. These fires destroyed about 25 percent of the city's buildings.
