The history of the region began with many tribal inhabitants. These included the Kansa, Osage, Otoe, and Missouri people. The first documented European visitor was Étienne de Veniard, Sieur de Bourgmont. He explored the lower Missouri River and described the river junction. Later, the Spanish controlled the region through the Treaty of Paris in 1763. They taxed and licensed ship traffic on the Missouri River. The Chouteau family arrived in the area by 1821. They established Chouteau's Landing to help with river trade.

Settlement grew rapidly in the 1830s near the rivers. The area became a vital port for westward expansion. Three major trails passed through Jackson County. These were the Santa Fe, California, and Oregon trails. In 1831, a group of Mormons settled in the area. They built the first school but were forced out by 1833. Other settlers like John McCoy established Westport along the Santa Fe Trail. By 1850, the landing area was incorporated as the town of Kansas.

The city underwent several name changes during its early years. It was incorporated as the town of Kansas on June 1, 1850. In 1853, it was reincorporated as the City of Kansas. There was often confusion between the city and the Kansas Territory. To fix this, the name Kansas City was assigned in 1889. This change happened as the city began to grow quickly. A major boost came when the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad bridge opened. This bridge, designed by Octave Chanute, allowed trains to cross the river.
