Throughout his life, he worked to move Portugal away from dictatorship. He served as Prime Minister during two different periods. Later, he served as the President of Portugal for ten years. His leadership helped shape the modern democratic state of the country.

Soares began his professional life in academia. He studied history and philosophy at the University of Lisbon. He became a university lecturer in 1957. However, his political beliefs made his career difficult. He opposed the dictatorship led by António de Oliveira Salazar. This opposition led to several arrests by the PIDE, which was the political police.

Because of these arrests, he could no longer teach. He decided to study law and became an attorney to defend political prisoners.

His political journey involved many different groups and shifts in thought. As a student, he was a member of the Portuguese Communist Party. He eventually left that party in 1951. He moved toward economic liberalism and helped found the Portuguese Socialist Action.

In 1973, this group became the Socialist Party. Soares was elected as its first Secretary-General. He held this leadership position until 1986.

The Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974, changed everything. This revolution saw the military seize power and end the dictatorship. Soares returned from exile to help lead the new provisional government. He served as the minister for overseas negotiations. In this role, he worked to organize the independence of Portugal's colonies. He met with leaders like Samora Machel to discuss the independence of Mozambique.

After the revolution, Portugal faced intense political struggles. There were deep conflicts between the Socialists and the Communist Party. Soares became Prime Minister in 1976 after the first democratic elections. His first term was short because of economic problems. He had to use strict austerity policies to manage the country's finances. He resigned in 1978 but returned to the office of Prime Minister in 1983. During this second term, he successfully negotiated Portugal's entry into the European Economic Community.

In 1986, Soares reached a new level of leadership. He was elected President of Portugal, beating his opponent by just over 2%.

He was re-elected in 1991 with nearly 70% of the vote. As president, he created the "Open Presidency." This was a series of tours across the country. He used these tours to discuss issues like the environment. He wanted to connect the presidency with the daily lives of citizens.

His influence extended far beyond the borders of Portugal. In 1989, he was the first foreign head of state to visit Czechoslovakia during its Velvet Revolution.

Soares passed away on January 7, 2017. His death was marked by a state funeral in Lisbon.
