He is most famous for his concept of "elemental music." This idea focused on the unity of different art forms. He believed music should combine tone, dance, poetry, and theatrical gesture. This approach aimed to create a total sensory experience. His work changed how people think about the relationship between sound and movement. He sought to make art that felt natural and primal.

Orff developed a specific teaching method called Schulwerk. This system was designed for musical beginners and children. It integrated music with gymnastics, dance, and rhythm. He wanted students to experience music with their entire bodies. In 1924, he helped found the Günther-Schule in Munich. This school focused on these combined arts. He published a manual for his method in 1930. His theories on music education remain influential in classrooms today.

Orff's musical style was shaped by many different influences. He studied at the Munich Academy of Music from 1912 to 1914. During this time, he listened to the works of Claude Debussy. He also studied the music of Arnold Schoenberg. Later, he was drawn to the work of Igor Stravinsky. However, he preferred the earthy, folkloric style of Stravinsky's "Les noces." He was also profoundly influenced by the playwright Bertolt Brecht. These diverse sources helped him build his unique musical language.

His early life in Munich provided a strong musical foundation. He was born on July 10, 1895. His mother was a trained pianist. His father was an army officer with strong musical interests. Orff began playing the piano at age five. He later studied the cello and the organ. He even wrote music for puppet plays as a young man. His first published musical vignettes appeared in 1905. These early works showed his growing talent.

Orff faced significant physical challenges during World War I. He was forced into the German Army in August 1917. During his service, a trench caved in on him. This accident caused severe injuries. He suffered from amnesia and aphasia. He also experienced paralysis on his left side. His daughter believed this difficult recovery made him more revolutionary. He had to work very hard to regain his abilities.

In 1937, Orff achieved massive success with his cantata, Carmina Burana. It premiered in Frankfurt on June 8, 1937. The work used unfamiliar and powerful rhythms. It became a very popular piece in Germany. The city of Frankfurt awarded him 500 RM for the work. While it was successful, some critics used racist taunts against its rhythms. Historians note its importance during the Third Reich era. However, it was not a commissioned work for the government.

Orff's career also included interesting adaptations of older music. He worked on a version of the 1607 opera L'Orfeo. He renamed it "Orpheus" and staged it in 1925. He used some original instruments from the 1607 performance. This project brought him very little money. The public often reacted with incomprehension or ridicule. He also wrote new incidental music for Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream." His version premiered in Frankfurt in 1939.
