La Monte Young is a famous musician. He is known for making minimalist music. This kind of music uses very few parts. He often uses long, steady tones. These are called drones. As a boy, he loved these sounds. He liked the wind blowing. He also liked the hum of electric tools.

Young moved to New York in 1960. There, he joined a group called Fluxus. This group made many kinds of art. Some of his musical scores were like poems. One score told a person to draw a straight line. He said this rule guided his life.

He worked with his wife, Marian Zazeela. They made the Dream House. This is a place filled with light and sound. It feels like a dream. They used sine waves, which are smooth electronic sounds. They also used light sculptures.

Young also studied Indian music. He learned from a singer named Pandit Pran Nath. This helped him make his best work. It is a piece for piano called The Well-Tuned Piano. This piece can last over six hours! It is a very big task for a player.
