Étienne Decroux was a famous French actor and teacher. He spent his life studying the art of mime. Mime is a way of acting where people tell stories without using words. Decroux did not just want to perform; he wanted to change how we see movement. He created a special style called corporeal mime. This style focuses on using the whole body to express deep feelings. It is a way to make the body a powerful tool for art.

His way of moving was very special and carefully planned. He used a technique called isolations. This means an actor moves one part of the body at a time. He also studied the physics of balance. Actors had to learn how to stay steady when they shifted their center of gravity. In his early days, his movements looked like stone statues. Later, his style became more fluid and plastic. This helped him create shapes with his body that looked like art.

Decroux began his journey in Paris, France. He studied at the Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier starting in 1923. He was a student of Charles Dullin during this time. Decroux wanted to find a new way to define mime. When his school closed in 1924, he taught at an acting school called the Atelier. He worked closely with another performer named Jean-Louis Barrault for two years. Together, they created many pieces of corporeal mime.

Decroux traveled to New York around 1957 to teach. He held classes on 8th Avenue and 55th Street. He even had a group called The Mime Theatre of Etienne Decroux. They performed shows like "The Factory" and "The Trees" at The Cricket Theatre. Many famous people learned from him. His students included Marcel Marceau and the actress Jessica Lange. He later returned to France and opened a school in Boulogne-Billancourt.

Decroux also wrote a book called Words on Mime. In this book, he shared very big ideas about theatre. He believed actors should master their bodies before they use their voices. He even suggested that actors should stop using speech for 30 years! He wanted them to learn to express everything through movement first. He thought this would stop actors from being lazy with their words. His ideas helped many people understand the true power of the human body.
