People use them to share news, greetings, or important information. Sometimes letters are formal, and sometimes they are informal. This depends on who is receiving the message. Letters can even be a form of art. When writing is done in the form of letters, it is called epistolary writing.

Even though we use computers now, letters have always been a way to connect people across distances.

In the past, people did not always have paper to write on.

They used many different materials to send their messages. Some wrote on metal or lead. Others used wax-coated wooden tablets or pieces of pottery. People also wrote on animal skin or papyrus. One story from Ovid says a person named Acontius used an apple to send a letter!

Today, most people use paper, and they might handwrite or type their words.

Letters have been around for a very long time. They are mentioned in the ancient story called the Iliad.

Historians like Herodotus and Thucydides also used letters in their work. Letters have existed in ancient India, Egypt, Sumer, Rome, Greece, and China. During the 1700s, people called it the "Great Age of Letter Writing." This was a time when many people wrote letters to learn things or share ideas. It was a way for people to express who they were.

History is full of interesting facts about how letters changed.

In the 1700s, people had to pay for postage. Writers were very clever and tried to use fewer pages to save money. In the United States, the Postal Act of 1845 helped make letters more popular by lowering the price.

Families in medieval Britain left behind many collections of letters. These include the Paston Letters from 1425 to 1520. These collections help us see what daily life was like long ago.

Today, we use new tools like the Internet, email, and text messages.

These tools are much faster than the old ways. The telegraph used electrical signals to send messages quickly. Later, the fax machine sent images through phone lines. Even so, paper letters are still very special. They show a person's real handwriting, which feels very personal. You can even put small objects inside an envelope to send to a friend!
