Some people use them in a classroom. Other people use them to teach themselves at home. Today, you can find them as paper books or digital files. Digital books are often called e-books. They can be found on computers or tablets.

Learning has changed many times throughout history. Long ago, people shared stories by speaking them aloud. They did not always write things down. About 2,500 years ago, the Greeks created an alphabet. This meant people did not have to memorize everything. A philosopher named Socrates actually worried about this change. He feared that writing would make people's minds weaker.

He felt that being able to remember things was very important.

The way we make books changed in the 1400s. A German man named Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press. He used a special metal mix to make letters. He also used a wooden press to put ink on paper. In the 1450s, he printed the famous Gutenberg Bible. This invention allowed people to make many books at once. Because of this, books became cheaper and easier to find. By the 16th century, printed books were spreading across Europe.

In the 1800s, more children began using textbooks in school. In the United States, books like the New England Primer were very important. Today, the textbook market is led by a few large companies. In the U.S., four companies control 90% of the money made from books. These companies are Pearson, Cengage, McGraw-Hill, and Wiley.

Some companies also sell books with extra items. This is called bundling. It includes things like workbooks or online codes. This can make the price of the book much higher.

Students have many ways to get books without spending too much. Many people buy used books to save money. You can buy them from college bookstores or other students.

Some bookstores will buy books back from students at the end of a term. If the book is in good shape, they might pay half the original price. Other times, they may only pay a small part of the cost. Many authors now use open licenses to share their books for free. This helps make learning easier for everyone around the world.
