Library classification

society Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Library classification is a system used to organize many things. These items include books, videos, and even electronic materials. Libraries use these systems for shelves and for digital catalogs. Each item gets a special call number. This number acts like a home address for the item. It tells you exactly where to find it in the building.

Classification helps group similar things together. This makes it much easier for people to find what they need.

There are different ways a library can organize its items. Some use a hierarchical tree structure. This means they start with a broad subject and move to specific details. Other systems use a faceted method. This allows one item to have many different classifications at once. Most systems are actually a blend of these two ways. For example, the Dewey Decimal Classification uses both methods. It uses a hierarchy for general topics but adds details later.

People have been organizing libraries for a very long time. The earliest known scheme was called the Pinakes. A scholar named Callimachus created it in the third century BC. During the Renaissance, libraries were often organized by the person in charge. Some collections were sorted by language or how they were printed. After the printing revolution in the sixteenth century, things changed. There were too many books for those old ways to work. By the nineteenth century, libraries needed much more detailed systems.

Many famous people helped shape how we find books today. In 1627, Gabriel Naudé wrote a book about building libraries. He worked with a private collection that had 8,000 printed books. Naudé created seven classes like history, math, and medicine. He also believed that libraries should be open to everyone. Around 1644, the Bibliothèque Mazarine became the first public library in France. Later, Jacques Charles Brunet made a modern system in 1842. His system had five major classes, including sciences and arts.

Today, we use many different types of classification systems. Universal schemes like the Dewey Decimal Classification cover all subjects. Some schemes are specific to just one topic. For example, Iconclass is used for art. Other systems are made for specific countries. The Library of Congress Classification is used by many large research libraries. In small libraries, people might use a simple method. They might just group books by interests like travel or crime. This helps everyone navigate the huge world of information.
