Reference work

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A reference work is a special kind of document used to find information. You might find them as books, papers, or even on a computer. People do not usually read them from the first page to the last. Instead, they look for one specific fact when they need it. These works are meant to help you find answers very quickly. They are tools for learning and checking details.

Writing a reference work is a very careful job. The authors use an informative style to share what they know. They focus on facts and avoid sharing their own personal opinions. They also do not use the word "I" to talk about themselves. Many of these works are made by a whole team of people. One or more editors coordinate the work of all these contributors.

There are many different types of reference works to explore. An atlas is a collection of maps. A dictionary lists words and explains what they mean. A thesaurus helps you find words with similar meanings. You can also find almanacs, which are books published every year. Some works, like a concordance, are very specialized and used rarely.

Some reference works are updated very often to stay current. For example, Whitaker's Almanack and Who's Who are published every year. In the past, most of these works were printed on paper. Today, many are electronic resources found on the Internet. You can use software, CD-ROMs, or DVDs to find them. Wikipedia is a famous online encyclopedia. It is the largest and most-read reference work in history.

Libraries have special rules for these important books. In many public or school libraries, you cannot borrow them to take home. You must use them while you are inside the library. This is because some books are used all the time. Other books are used so rarely that they are hard to replace. Libraries might let you use a photocopier or a digital scanner instead. This helps keep the information available for everyone to use.
