It is a science that looks at how papers were made. Experts study the rules and patterns used by the people who wrote them. This helps us understand how information was shared in the past. It also helps us see if a document matches what really happened. This study is one of the many tools used by historians. It is different from palaeography, which is the study of old handwriting.

To do this work, experts look at many small details. They examine the specific words and the way sentences are built. They also look at the forms and the way a document is issued. This includes looking at the script and the meaning of the text. Some scholars even look at the physical parts of a paper. They might study the ink or the seals used on a document. This careful work helps them decide if a record is genuine or a forgery.

This study began because people needed to find the truth.

In the past, some people made fake documents to claim rights they did not have. They often hid these fakes in safe places like temples or public offices. In 1433, Nicolas of Cusa used these ideas to find a fake. In 1440, Lorenzo Valla also found the same fake. This document was called the Donation of Constantine. It had been used for a long time to give power to leaders.

A monk named Jean Mabillon helped make this a real science. He was a Benedictine monk who lived a long time ago. In 1681, he published a famous book about studying documents. Because of this work, people became more careful about finding fakes. Many people call Mabillon the father of diplomatics. Later, in 1750, Tassin and Toustain wrote a large six-volume book on the subject. In 1702, Thomas Madox published an important work in English.

Today, these skills are used to solve many different mysteries. These rules can help us date documents that have no date on them. They are also very useful in the field of law. Experts have used these methods to catch the Hitler diaries hoax in 1983. They also used them to find fakes in the National Archives in 2005. Even today, these ideas can be used to study electronic records.
