Experts look at how people made them. They study the words, the shapes, and the rules used. This helps them know if a paper is real. It can also show when a paper was made.

Long ago, people made fake papers. They did this to claim rights they did not have. Some people thought a paper was real just because it was kept in a safe place. But a fake paper is still a fake.

In the 1400s, two men found a big fake. It was called the Donation of Constantine. It was a paper used to give power to leaders. They proved it was not true. Later, a monk named Jean Mabillon helped make this study a real science. He wrote a book in 1681. He is often called the father of diplomatics.

Today, this work helps solve mysteries. It can catch fake diaries or fake files on computers. It helps us find the true story of our past.
