Experts can often tell when a paper was made. They can also find out where it came from. This helps them know if a document is real.

It is a hard job to find exact dates. Sometimes, experts can only guess a range of many years. One man named Jean Mabillon started this work. He wrote the first textbook on it in 1681. Later, Bernard de Montfaucon used the name palaeography.

He used the name in a book about Greek writing.

Scribes often used short marks to write faster. These marks helped them save space on the page. Palaeographers must learn these special marks to read the text. They also study the materials used to write. This might include things like papyrus or potsherds. By studying these, they learn how people shared ideas long ago.
