An epigrapher is a person who studies these marks. They work to identify the symbols used. They also try to find their meanings. They classify writing by its date and culture. This helps us understand the people who wrote them.

Epigraphs can be found on many different things. They are not always long like a book. Most inscriptions are actually quite short.

Some are just a single mark on a pot. Others are very long documents or stories. The writing can be carved into stone or metal. It might be a scratch on a rock. Some people even used impressions in wax. Other marks were painted on ceramic or fresco. Sometimes, a clay tablet survives because it was baked in a fire.

Many important people have helped this field grow. Theodor Mommsen was one such famous scholar. He helped start a huge collection of Latin inscriptions. This collection is called the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum. It has been published in Berlin since 1863. It is organized by different places like Rome.

This allowed citizens to see the rules for themselves. They also carved lists of money spent on buildings. This showed how the state used its treasure. Some inscriptions were public decrees from kings. Others were private records for business or taxes. In Mycenaean Greece, they used a script called Linear B. This was mostly for keeping economic records.

This stone had three different types of writing. It used Greek and two types of Egyptian writing. Scholars Jean-François Champollion and Thomas Young used it. They used the stone to solve Egyptian hieroglyphs. This helped us read ancient Egyptian stories.
