Graphics are visual images or designs created on a surface to inform, illustrate, or entertain.

These surfaces can be physical, like a wall, canvas, paper, or stone. They can also be digital, such as a computer screen. In modern usage, the term includes pictorial representations of data used in design, manufacturing, and software. Graphics often combine several elements, including text, illustration, and color. They can be functional, such as an engineering drawing, or artistic, such as a painting. The primary objective of graphic design is often clarity, effective communication, or the creation of a distinctive style.

There are many specific mechanisms used to create different types of graphics. Drawing involves making marks on a surface by applying pressure with a tool. This is known as instrumental guided drawing. Printmaking uses different methods, such as woodblock printing, which was seen in China after the invention of paper around A.D. 105. Another method is etching, an intaglio technique. In etching, an artist uses acid to incise an image into a metal plate. The acid eats the metal to leave behind roughened areas or lines.

This process was used by Daniel Hopfer in Germany to decorate armor. Today, etching is also used to manufacture printed circuit boards and semiconductor devices.

Graphics can be categorized into many distinct types based on their purpose. Illustration is a visual representation that stresses the subject more than the form. Its goal is to decorate or explain a story, poem, or text. For example, an editorial cartoon uses illustration to deliver a political or social message.

Other types include graphs and charts, which represent tabular or numeric data to show relationships between different parts. Diagrams are simplified visual representations used to clarify complex concepts or constructions. Maps provide a geometrically accurate, two-dimensional depiction of a three-dimensional space to aid in navigation. Symbols serve as representations of specific concepts, objects, or quantities.

History shows that humans have used graphics for tens of thousands of years. The earliest known graphics are cave paintings and markings on bone, ivory, and antlers. These date back to the Upper Palaeolithic period, between 40,000 and 10,000 B.C. Many of these early works recorded astronomical or seasonal details. About 6,000 years ago, engraved stone tablets and ceramic seals began to be used for accounting and inventory.

In Egypt, papyrus was used to plan the construction of pyramids. Later, between 600 and 250 B.C., the Greeks used graphics to represent mathematical theories like the Pythagorean theorem.

In the modern era, computer graphics have become a massive field of study. There are two main types: raster graphics and vector graphics. Raster graphics are made of individual pixels, which is how a digital photograph works. Vector graphics use mathematical formulas to draw lines and shapes. This allows vector graphics to remain infinitely sharp at any size.

The history of this field began in 1950 at MIT with the first computer-driven display. In 1962, Ivan Sutherland invented Sketchpad, a program that changed how people interact with computers. By the 1980s, personal computers became serious tools for graphic designers and artists.

3D computer graphics have also transformed entertainment and media. Early 3D graphics appeared in video games like Spasim in 1974 and FS1 Flight Simulator in 1979. By 1992, the game Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss used texture-mapped polygons. The film industry reached a major milestone in 1995 with the release of Toy Story, the first full-length computer-generated animation film. Today, advanced software like Maya and Cinema 4D allows for incredibly detailed 3D modeling. These tools are essential for modern film developers and video game creators.

Graphics connect to almost every aspect of our technological lives. Web graphics allow us to navigate the internet using icons and symbols through a graphical user interface (GUI). In the 1990s, the Mosaic browser allowed for the viewing of images on the web. We use various file formats like JPEG, PNG, and GIF to display different types of web content.

Even screensavers, which were originally designed to prevent "burn-in" on computer screens, have evolved into pieces of digital art. From ancient stone carvings to modern digital pixels, graphics remain our primary way of visualizing the world.
