Illustrators create these images for integration into many different media. This includes print items like posters, flyers, magazines, and books. It also includes digital media such as animations, video games, films, and websites. In the digital world, illustrations like emojis help make apps and websites more user-friendly. The word "illustration" comes from the Latin word *illustrare*. In Middle English, it was used to mean spiritual or intellectual enlightenment. Beyond pictures, the word can also mean providing an example through writing.

Contemporary illustrators use a vast array of different techniques and styles. They may use traditional methods like drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, or montage. Modern artists often use digital design, multimedia, and 3D modelling to create their work. The style of an illustration depends heavily on its specific purpose. Some images are highly expressive or stylized to show emotion. Others are realistic or highly technical to show exact details.

In modern practice, 2D and 3D software allows artists to create accurate representations. These digital files can be updated easily and reused in many different contexts.

There are many specialist areas within the field of illustration. Technical and scientific illustration is a major branch that communicates complex information. These illustrators aim to generate expressive images that convey information to a human observer. They often create exploded views, cutaways, fly-throughs, or instructional diagrams. This work is usually designed to explain subjects to a nontechnical audience.

By providing an overall impression, they enhance the viewer's interest and understanding. Other specialized fields include architectural, botanical, medical, and fashion illustration. There are even professional groups like the Association of Medical Illustrators.

History shows that illustration is deeply linked to the history of printing. In ancient Egypt, hieroglyphs served as early forms of visual illustration.

During the Middle Ages, hand-drawn paintings in books were called illuminations. The invention of the printing press in the 15th century changed everything. Books became more widely distributed and were often illustrated with woodcuts. In 1600s Japan, the Ukiyo-e style became very influential. This style used ink-brushed wood block printing to show folk tales and everyday life.

In Europe, engraving and etching were the main ways to reproduce images during the 16th and 17th centuries. By the 19th century, lithography greatly improved the quality of reproduction.

The 19th century saw a massive boom in the demand for illustrators. In England, the magazine *Punch* became very influential during the 1840s and 1850s. *Punch* was the first to use the word "cartoon" to describe a humorous illustration. This led to John Leech being known as the world's first "cartoonist." During this time, printing technology allowed artists to experiment with color. Between 1846 and 1916, book production increased by 400 percent. At the same time, the price of books was cut in half. This era helped create a "golden age of illustration" in America. Many successful illustrators, like N.C. Wyeth, created images that represented American aspirations.

Today, illustration is a highly valued and professional art form. It was once considered less important than fine art or graphic design. However, the growth of video games and graphic novels has changed this view. Original illustration art now attracts very high prices at auctions. For example, a painting by Norman Rockwell sold for US$15.4 million in 2006. Pinup artists like Alberto Vargas also attract high prices for their work.

This shows that illustration can engage a massive global market. It is now recognized as a serious medium for artistic expression.

Being an illustrator can also be a stable and rewarding career. Professionals work in many places, such as museums, animation studios, and research institutes. The median salary for medical illustrators is $70,650. For science illustrators, the median salary is slightly higher at $72,277. These roles require a mix of artistic skill and technical knowledge. Whether creating a masterpiece for a book or an icon for a phone, illustrators help us see the world.

They bridge the gap between complex ideas and human understanding.
