An image is a visual way to represent something. It can be a flat, two-dimensional shape like a drawing or a painting. Some images are three-dimensional, like a stone sculpture or a carving.

You might see a fixed image on paper or a textile. Other images are volatile, meaning they only last for a short time. A reflection in a mirror is one kind of volatile image. You can even have a mental image that lives only in your mind.

Images can show us things our eyes cannot see alone. Some tools use light waves to make an optical image. Telescopes help us see objects at great distances. Microscopes make tiny, minute objects look much larger.

X-rays can show the inside structures of a human body. Other machines like MRI or PET scans use special signals to create pictures. Even radar from a space shuttle can make an image. This specific image shows the Teide volcano from space. It uses colors like green, brown, and purple to show different areas.

People have been making images since the Paleolithic era. This was a very long time ago in human history. Early humans made rock art in caves on every inhabited continent. They made paintings, reliefs, and large shapes on the ground called geoglyphs.

These images helped people keep records or share stories. They were also used in spiritual or religious practices. Even early writing systems, like hieroglyphics, started as pictorial representations. These images were a way for people to communicate with each other.

Images can act as different kinds of signs. A philosopher named Charles Sanders Peirce had three ideas for this. An icon is an image that looks like the real thing. A portrait is an icon because it resembles a person. An index is a sign with a real connection to something. Smoke is an index because it shows there is a fire. A symbol is a sign that has a special meaning. For example, the color red might mean many different things in different cultures.

Moving images are actually a clever trick for our eyes. We see them when still images are shown in a fast sequence. This is called the illusion of movement. In movies, a standard is 24 frames per second. This helps keep the images and sounds in sync. Some people used to call this "persistence of vision." Today, scientists use other names like "flicker fusion" or the "phi phenomenon." These terms describe how our brains and eyes work together to see motion.
