Photography is the art of making images by recording light. The word comes from Greek roots meaning "drawing with light."

People use it for many things. They use it for art and science. It is also used in business and movies. A person who takes these pictures is called a photographer.

The final image is called a photograph. This amazing tool helps us share how the world looks.

How does a camera work? First, a lens focuses light onto a surface inside the camera.

In digital cameras, light hits an electronic image sensor. This sensor creates an electrical charge at every pixel. A computer then turns this into a digital file. In older cameras, light hits a light-sensitive material called film. This creates an invisible image that must be chemically developed.

This process can create a negative or a positive image.

Long ago, people used a "dark chamber" called a camera obscura.

Ancient thinkers like Aristotle and Euclid described this effect. An Arab physicist named Ibn al-Haytham also studied it. He was the first to use a screen to show a projected image. Later, inventors like Nicéphore Niépce worked to keep these images forever. In 1826, Niépce made a famous view from his window. This is the earliest surviving photograph of a real scene.

Many inventors helped make photography what it is today. Louis Daguerre created a faster way to take pictures in 1837. He even took a photo of a Paris street in 1838.

In that photo, most people moved too fast to be seen. Only one man stood still enough to appear in the shot. At the same time, William Fox Talbot made paper negatives.

His method allowed people to make many copies from one negative. This was a huge step for the future of art.

Photography links many different parts of our lives together. It connects science, like looking at Saturn's rings, to everyday hobbies.

You might use a smartphone to take a quick photo today. This is much different from the old photographic laboratories. In the past, people had to use chemicals in a dark room.

Now, we can see our images almost instantly. Whether through film or digital sensors, we are still drawing with light.
