Long before modern cameras, people used the camera obscura. This term means "dark chamber" in Latin. Ancient thinkers like Aristotle and Euclid described this phenomenon. In the 6th century, Anthemius of Tralles used it for experiments. The Arab physicist Ibn al-Haytham provided the first correct analysis. He understood the relationship between the pinhole and the focal point. He even used a screen to project images in a dark room. 
True photography required finding ways to make images permanent. Nicéphore Niépce made the first permanent photoetching in 1822. In 1826, he produced "View from the Window at Le Gras." This is the earliest surviving photograph of a real-world scene. 
Other inventors made huge contributions during the 1830s and 1840s. William Fox Talbot created the calotype process in 1840. His method used a translucent negative. This allowed for the creation of many positive copies. This was a major difference from the daguerreotype. 
Today, photography connects many different scientific and creative worlds. It allows us to see things the human eye cannot easily capture. For example, we can photograph Saturn's rings in ultraviolet light. It is used in manufacturing through processes like photolithography. It is also a central part of modern mass communication. From professional studios to a simple smartphone, the goal remains the same. We are still using light to draw our world.
