Digital photography is a way to capture images using light and electronics.

Before this technology arrived, people used photographic film and paper. Those old cameras needed liquid chemical solutions to develop and stabilize an image. Today, digital cameras work without any wet chemical processing. They use electronic parts to turn light into a computer file. This file can be viewed, printed, or shared online instantly. It is a very different way to see the world.

How does a digital camera actually work? It starts when light passes through a camera lens. The light hits an image sensor, which is an array of tiny electronic detectors. Each tiny part is called a pixel. Each pixel measures how much light hits it. This measurement is then turned into a digital value by a converter.

Most cameras use color filters to make sure the final picture has color. These values are then stored as a file on a memory card. This process happens very quickly inside the camera.

The history of digital imaging began many years ago. In 1951, the first digital signals were saved to magnetic tape. In 1957, a man named Russell Kirsch created the first digital image. It was a picture of his son, Walden.

Later, in 1969, physicists Willard S. Boyle and George E. Smith invented the CCD. A CCD is a type of sensor that moves electric charges along a circuit. This invention was so important that they won a Nobel Prize in 2009.

Many important milestones helped digital cameras grow. In 1975, Steven Sasson at Eastman Kodak made the first portable digital camera. It was heavy, weighing 8 pounds, and it used a cassette tape.

NASA also used digital tools to explore space. In 1965, the Mariner 4 spacecraft took the first close-up images of Mars. By the late 1990s, digital cameras became available for people to buy. In 2000, companies like Sharp and Samsung began making cell phones with cameras.

Digital photography is now part of our daily lives. You might use a small camera phone to send a photo to a friend.

You might also use a professional DSLR or a smaller mirrorless camera. Mirrorless cameras are popular because they are small but take great pictures. They use an electronic viewfinder to show you what the lens sees. This technology lets everyone be a photographer, from scientists to students.
