It can be a painting, a photograph, or even a sculpture. Most portraits focus on the face because it is so important. Sometimes an artist shows only half of the body. Other times, they show the full body of the person. This helps show the person's mood or personality.

In photography, a portrait is not just a quick snapshot. It is a carefully composed image where the person stays still. The person might look right at the viewer to connect with them. They might also be shown from the side in a profile view.

Making a portrait involves many different steps and styles. An artist might use paint on a wall or a canvas. Some people make portraits by carving stone or clay into statues. In the past, people used a method called the daguerreotype to make photos. These early photos required the person to sit still for 30 seconds. Photographers used soft light from windows and mirrors to help.

They often placed the subject against a plain background. This helped the focus stay on the person's face and expression. Today, many people pay for professional portraits to remember special days. These might be for weddings or a graduation ceremony.

People have been creating portraits for thousands of years. Some of the oldest examples are plastered human skulls from the Levant. These were made between 9000 and 6000 BC.

Another very old portrait was found in a cave near Angoulême. Scientists think that cave portrait is 27,000 years old. In ancient Peru, the Moche culture made very detailed portraits. They showed leaders, priests, and even skilled workers. These Moche works showed people at many different stages of life. They even included the faces of gods in their art.

Many famous portraits have become known all over the world. Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa, which is a very famous portrait of Lisa del Giocondo. Official portraits are also very important in many countries. These show leaders like monarchs or presidents. They often include symbols like a flag or a coat of arms. During World War II, people even hid portraits of leaders to show resistance. These images became symbols of unity for many people.

There are even ways to make portraits without using paint or cameras. An artist can make a self-portrait of themselves. In books, a writer can create a portrait using only words. This is called a literary portrait. It uses descriptions to show a person's character and feelings. A writer might use facts and stories to build this image. This can help a reader understand a person deeply. Whether through art or words, a portrait helps us see others. It captures a moment in time for us to study.
