A bust is a special kind of sculpture. It shows the upper part of a human body. Most busts show a person's head and neck. They might also include the chest and shoulders.

Artists make these pieces in many different ways. They use materials like marble, bronze, or wood. Some artists even use wax, plaster, or terracotta. Most busts sit on a base called a plinth. This format is very popular for portraits. It shows a person's face with great detail. It also takes up much less space than a full statue.

Making a bust is a very careful job. Artists want to capture how a person looks. They can use many materials to reach this goal. Some busts are made of stone like marble. Others are cast in metal like bronze. A sculptor might use clay or even painted wood.

Some busts have flat bottoms. Other styles have a round bottom. These round busts often sit on a short pedestal called a socle. This helps the sculpture stand up tall and proud.

People have been making busts for a very long time. The portrait bust was first made by Hellenistic Greeks. However, Egyptian busts existed five hundred years before that. In ancient Rome, busts were very important to families. They kept wax masks of their dead family members. These masks were used in funeral processions. Later, families replaced these masks with stone sculptures. These were called portraits of the ancestors. They were a sign of belonging to a special group.

Many famous artists have worked on busts through history. During the Renaissance, artists used marble and painted wood. Francesco Laurana was a sculptor who worked in Italy and France. He was known for making marble busts of women. Later, during the Baroque period, Gian Lorenzo Bernini became very famous. He lived in Rome and made busts of popes and kings. He once made a bust of King Charles I of England in 1638. He did not meet the king in person. Instead, he used a painting to help him work.

Busts help us connect with people from the past. They can show us what leaders or gods looked like. For example, the Adiyogi Shiva statue is in India. It is a very tall sculpture of the Hindu God Shiva. This is the largest bust sculpture in the whole world.

In the Middle Ages, some busts were used to hold holy items. One famous example is the gold Bust of Charlemagne. It can still be seen in the Aachen Cathedral treasury. These sculptures keep history alive for us to see today.
