Artists make them in many ways. They use marble or bronze. They also use wood, wax, or clay.

Busts are very popular. They show a person's face well. They take up less space than full statues. They also cost less to make.

Most busts sit on a base. This base is called a plinth.

People have made busts for a long time. In ancient Rome, families kept wax masks of dead members. Later, they made stone busts to show their ancestors. In the Renaissance, artists used wood or marble. Some artists made busts that were flat on the bottom. Later, a style with a round bottom became common. These sat on a short stand called a socle. One famous artist was Gian Lorenzo Bernini. He made busts of kings and popes. Today, the largest bust is the Adiyogi Shiva statue in India.
