Artists use portraits to show how a person looks and feels.

People have made portraits for a very long time. Some very old skulls were covered in plaster. These were made in the Middle East long ago. In ancient Peru, the Moche people made very detailed portraits. They showed leaders, priests, and even workers. They even showed people at different ages.

Some portraits are for official use. These show important people like kings or presidents.

You might see these in government buildings. They can act as a symbol for a country.

Artists also make self-portraits. This is when they make art of themselves. In books, a portrait can be a written description. A writer uses words to show a person's character.
