Visual language

We use many ways to share our thoughts with others. Most people think of speech as the main way to talk. However, we also use a visual language to communicate. This is a system that uses things we can see. It uses many small parts to build big ideas. These parts include line, shape, and color. It also uses form, motion, texture, and pattern. You can also use direction, scale, and proportion.

A map or a painting is a great example. These things show ideas in a space rather than in a line of words.

Our brains are very special at reading these visual signs. Different parts of the brain respond to different things. For example, some areas react to color and form. Scientists like Semir Zeki have studied how brains react to famous painters. They looked at artists like Michelangelo, Rembrandt, and Picasso.

Our minds also use visual language when we dream. In dreams, we see images that might not have words. Even when we are awake, we can daydream. We might see shapes in the drifting clouds. These images come from our own imagination.

People have used visual signs for a very long time. Long ago, people drew on rocks to leave messages. The Bronze Age Badger Stone on Ilkly Moor is a famous example. It is covered in many different marks. You can see circles, lines, and even winged figures on it. There are also shapes like a shooting star or an embryo.

These drawings tell stories from a world before people used written words. Some people believe this helped our ancestors learn to think in new ways.

Our eyes and minds work together to find patterns. This is often called gestalt theory. A man named Christian von Ehrenfels proposed this idea in 1890. He said a whole thing is more than just its parts. Later, Max Wertheimer studied this in 1923. He found that our eyes like to group things that look alike. Our minds even try to finish a shape if it is incomplete.

This helps us see a whole object instead of just random dots.

Learning this visual language is a big part of growing up. Babies start to recognize patterns as their eyes focus. As children grow, they use drawings to show their own ideas. Some experts call this skill graphicacy. This is a word for the ability to communicate with pictures. It is seen as a skill just as important as reading or math.
