Microsoft Paint is a tool for making digital art. It is known as a raster graphics editor. This means it uses small dots to build images.

The program has been part of the Windows operating system for many years. It is very easy for people to use. Because it is so simple, many people used it to learn how to paint on a computer for the first time. It can open and save many different types of files. These include BMP, JPEG, GIF, PNG, and TIFF formats.

Working in Paint is a step-by-step process. You can choose different tools to change your image. You might use a pencil or a brush to draw lines. Some versions have artistic brushes that look like oil or watercolor.

These special brushes can even act like real ones. They might only paint for a short distance before you must click again. This makes it look like the brush ran out of paint. You can also use a tool to crop your image. To do this, you drag the blue handle in the corner. This helps you remove extra white space around your art.

The history of Paint goes back many decades. It was first made for Windows 1.0 in late 1985. A man named Dan McCabe programmed it at Microsoft. It was based on a program called PC Paintbrush from a company named ZSoft. The very first version was quite limited. It only had 24 tools and could only use one color at a time. It also used a special file format called MSP. Microsoft later stopped using the MSP format for its own purposes.

Paint has changed a lot through different versions of Windows. In Windows 3.0, it gained support for true color. By Windows 95, Microsoft began writing the code from scratch. The Windows Vista version allowed you to undo mistakes up to 10 times. Later, Windows 7 added a "ribbon" to the screen. This version let you undo up to 50 changes. In 2017, Microsoft tried to replace Paint with a new app called Paint 3D. However, many people asked to keep the original Paint. Because of this, it stayed in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Today, Paint continues to grow with new technology. The Windows 11 version has a dark mode to help your eyes. It also includes a tool that uses AI to help generate art. You can even use layers to build your pictures. Layers are like clear sheets stacked on top of each other. Some newer features can make small images look blurry when you resize them. This happens because of math rules called interpolation algorithms. Even with these changes, Paint remains a famous part of computer history.
