Computers use a special set of rules to show colors correctly. This system is called sRGB, which stands for standard RGB.

It is a color space used for monitors, printers, and the World Wide Web. Because it is a standard, colors look similar across many different devices. If an image does not have a specific color profile, most computers assume it uses sRGB. This makes it a very important tool for sharing pictures online.

To understand how it works, we look at how light is handled. sRGB uses three primary colors: red, green, and blue. By mixing these, it can create a wide range of other colors called a gamut.

The system uses a special math rule called a transfer function, or gamma. This rule helps manage brightness levels in a clever way. It uses a straight line for very dark colors near zero. For the rest of the colors, it uses a curved path called a power law. This helps the screen show more detail in dark areas without making mistakes.

This way of working started because of how old screens behaved. In the 1970s, most computers sent data to monitors in a straight line. However, the monitors did not show brightness in a straight line. They followed a power law with an exponent between 2 and 3. This meant the brightness was not a simple match to the signal. People called this "gamma correction." The sRGB standard was created to match the way these computer monitors worked.

Two big companies helped create this standard in 1996. Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft proposed the first draft. Later, the International Electrotechnical Commission made it an official standard in 1999. This official version is known as IEC 61966-2-1:1999. In 2003, they added an amendment to the standard. This update included new ways to handle color, such as sYCC encoding. These updates helped the standard work better as technology improved.

You can see sRGB in action every time you use the internet. Most digital cameras and scanners use it as their main setting. It works well because its colors match what many home printers can do. Even HDTV systems use similar color rules, known as the BT.709 standard. While they are similar, sRGB is specifically designed for home and office viewing. This ensures that the colors you see on your screen look just right.
