Digital painting is a way to make art on a computer.

Artists use pixels, which are tiny dots on a screen, to make images. These images can look like old paintings or drawings. Many artists use a graphics tablet instead of a mouse.

A tablet is a tool that lets you draw by hand. It tells the computer where your pen moves.

This kind of art has a long history. In 1963, a student named Ivan Sutherland made Sketchpad. It let people move objects on a screen. Later, a program called MacPaint helped people draw freely. In 1987, Thomas Knoll made a program called Photoshop. Today, Photoshop and Illustrator are very popular tools.

Digital painting is used in many places. Film makers use it to design characters and scenes. They use matte painting to make backgrounds that look real. Video game makers also use it to plan how a game looks. Even book covers are often made this way. Rick Berry made the first digital book cover for a book called Neuromancer.
