Drawing is a way to make marks on a surface.

You can use many tools to do this. People use pencils, pens, and crayons. Some use dry tools like chalk or charcoal. Others use liquid tools like ink or watercolor.

You can draw on paper, wood, or even leather. Most people use paper. Some paper is smooth for fine details. Other paper is rough to hold more color.

Drawing is one of the oldest ways to share ideas. Long ago, people made drawings on cave walls. These were called pictograms.

Drawing also helps scientists learn. In 1609, Galileo used drawings to show the moon. Today, people use drawing for many jobs. Artists use it to plan paintings. Architects use it to design buildings. Engineers use it to show how machines work. A quick drawing is called a sketch. Some artists, like Jean-Michel Basquiat, drew on many things. He used markers on doors and even baseball helmets!
